Enhancing Your Home's Exterior: 5 Landscaping Ideas to Try This Summer

Never underestimate the power of your home’s exterior, specifically when it comes to landscaping. Nice, well-kept landscaping can really improve a home’s curb appeal and make your street or neighborhood feel like a nice, desirable place to live.

For homeowners looking to sell, landscaping can add to your home’s curb appeal and grab a potential buyer’s attention, encouraging them to schedule a house showing. In other words, it’s the exterior of the house that catches the eye of the buyer and the interior that keeps them. They have to like what they see from the outside first.

There are little things that can be done to spruce up the yard, such as adding fresh mulch, planting flowers, and trimming trees and bushes. But there are more extensive things that you can do to really make a difference too.

Here’s a look at five ideas to try out this summer:

5 Ideas for Enhancing Landscaping

1. Add Solar Lighting to Walkways and Garden Beds

Small solar lights are readily available in any home improvement retail store and most major online retailers as well. They’re an easy and an inexpensive way to add lighting and decor to your home’s exterior without spending hours digging holes for underground wiring. Solar lights in front landscaping beds are a given, but these types of lights are also available as accent and string lights to help add safety and decor to decks and patios, garden beds, walkways and more come sundown. And since they are charged by the sun during the day, your only investment is the price of the lighting.

2. Add a Water Feature

Adding either a fountain or a natural water feature can be a perfect accent for any yard. It’s easy and affordable to purchase fountains of all shapes or sizes at any hardware store. These run on electric pumps and can be easily positioned in landscaping. For a more extensive overhaul, creating a larger, natural fountain or pond can add elegance to a yard. Consider using natural stone to really make the feature stand out. More involved projects like a natural fountain or pond can be DIYed in just a weekend. So in just a few days, you could take your backyard from basic to an indulgent escape!

3. Update your Square Garden Beds with Curved Borders

When homeowners plan out landscaping beds around the foundation of their home and existing plants, it can be tempting to use straight lines. However, adding curves can really make a landscaping bed stand out, as they add size, structure and interest to your outdoor space.

Take note of the difference between a landscaping bed featuring a curved design compared to one that’s straight the next time you're out for a walk. Use these unique designs to help bring a fresh look to your garden spaces.

Pro Tip: To really amplify the beauty of a particular landscaping bed, opt for rocks or bricks rather than just the standard garden edging.

4. Add Entry Gates

If your neighborhood allows it, and you like the style of it, a front-yard entry gate and fence can make for a nice, inviting touch, while also allowing a home to maintain a sense of privacy. A white picket fence or wrought iron gate are particularly trendy right now, but any style will work. This landscaping idea is particularly ideal for older homes with detached garages.

5. Replace Plain Driveways and Walkways With Decorative Pavers

While this idea is likely to be more costly, one way to really add flair to your front yard is by redoing any paved or concrete walkways with special decorative pavers or stone. This won’t just add more value to a property, but it will make it stand out from the street and greatly enhance curb appeal. Like we said, it’s bit more of an extensive project, but if it’s done right it can really add a great deal of beauty and elegance to a home.

With spring here and summer right around the corner, now’s the time to get your landscaping in tip-top shape, especially considering that many of the products needed to complete these projects are likely to be more widely available now that the season has turned. Which landscaping idea do you like the best?
